Skincare Questions

Why should I use oil-based products for my oily and acne-prone skin, won't that make my problem worse?

Absolutely not. It is a very common misbelief that oil-based products clog your pores and cause your skin to break out. Unfortunately, this misbelief has been fed by the cosmetic industry and ‘oil-free’ products have flooded the market for years. In fact, botanical, nutrient rich oils are the best you can feed your skin with to moisturize and protect while regulating the production of your skin’s natural oil, called sebum. Commercial ‘oil-free’ products contain synthetic preservatives, alcohol, and often artificial fragrances that dry out your skin, disrupt the natural moisture barrier, and make your skin even more oily by pushing your sebum production into overdrive. Besides, these products contain many pore-clogging synthetic ingredients that can make your acne problem worse.

With that being said, there are natural plant-based oils such as coconut oil that you should never use on your face since they can in fact clog your pores. These oils are called comedogenic. We at Rootanicals make sure that all our products never contain any oils that have a comedogenic rating of more than 1. For comparison, coconut rates 5, which is the highest and therefore one of the most pore clogging oils. You will never find this in any of our face products.

How often should I exfoliate per week and why?

A general rule is 1-2 times per week, depending on your skin. Some people exfoliate 3 times a week with great success but we suggest starting slow to see how your skin reacts, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Do I really need a separate product for my eyes?

Yes, we definitely recommend a separate eye cream. The skin around the eyes is thinner and more sensitive and therefore has different needs than the rest of your face. And did you know that the skin under your eyes has no oil glands? That’s right. It tends to dry and sag faster than the rest of our face and needs extra love and moisture. While eye creams and serums can focus specifically on these needs and reduce puffiness, dryness, and sagging, other factors such as poor sleep, alcohol consumption, and nutrition also play a major role. Genetic disposition is one of the main causes that cause dark under eye circles and unfortunately, no eye cream or serum can change your genetics. To defeat major under eye circles, lifestyle adjustments are needed and in some cases, the consultation of a health care professional might be necessary as it can be a sign of a more serious underlying health condition (e.g. thyroid dysfunction, poor circulation, allergies, or iron deficiency).

What causes acne?

The main causes for acne are excess sebum and clogged pores. On top of that, hormone levels play an integral role which is why your skin can change throughout your cycle, and stress can make your acne problem worse. This is why the goal for oily and acne-prone skin is to regulate sebum production and to declog pores. Many conventional anti-acne products contain alcohol and other synthetic ingredients that dry out your skin to make it less oily but that only increases your skin’s sebum production and makes the problem worse. Oily skin needs moisture in form of healthy oils that can balance your skin’s sebum production while not clogging your pores. Exfoliating 1-2 times a week also helps keep your pores clear and remove any acne-causing bacteria.

What causes my skin to age?

As you age, your skin loses elasticity and collagen, two crucial elements for firm and glowing skin. Without collagen and elasticity, your skin appears wrinkled and saggy. That is why the goal is to help your skin age healthy and beautifully by supporting its collagen production and reducing the damage of free radicals that destroy your skin’s natural collagen. Anti-oxidant rich oils such as blueberry seed oil or marula oil, botanical vitamins C, E, and A, as well as essential fatty acids are nature’s best treatments for aging and dry skin.

Product Questions

Why plant-based?

Plant-based skincare uses no unnecessary fillers, no synthetic preservatives, and no toxic irritants, all of which damage your skin – and the environment. The botanical world is so rich in natural vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fats and acids that it delivers all your skin needs to unfold its true beauty. The skin is our largest organ and soaks everything up, beneficial or not. Conventional skincare contains hundreds of unpronounceable ingredients that can dry out your skin, cause allergic reactions, contains toxins that interrupt your hormonal balance, and often times can increase the risk for cancer. And the list goes on.

Are all your ingredients certified organic?

All our products contain between 98% and 100% certified organic ingredients and therefore carry the USDA certified organic seal (according the the USDA regulations, products have to contain at least 95% certified organic ingredients, excluding non-agricultural ingredients such as salt or water, to be labeled ‘certified organic’). Some of our ingredients are wild-harvested which means they are harvested from land that is maintained in a natural state and not cultivated or otherwise managed. Therefore, those ingredients are not likely to be contaminated with any chemicals.

How long do your products last?

All our products are safe to keep for 12 months. Our oils will last even longer but to guarantee freshness, we recommend using them within 12 months. For the same reason we also recommend using our water-based products within 6 months.

Do you use any preservatives?

We’re glad you’re asking! While we never use any harmful chemical preservatives, water-based products still need preservation in order to be safe. Unpreserved hydrosols for example, especially if contaminated (which happens faster than you think), can go bad in as quickly as 2-3 months and cause skin irritations or bacterial outbreaks which can lead to acne. That is why we do not belief in ‘preservative-free’, and you shouldn’t either. Our micellar waters and eye make-up remover are preserved with gluconolactone (a poly-hydroxy acid, or PHA, with moisturizing and gentle exfoliating properties) and sodium benzoate (an organic sodium salt most commonly used by the food industry and often found in sodas, dressings, and canned goods). This non-toxic, ECOCERT preservative system is broad-spectrum, meaning it effectively protects our products from the growth of bacteria, fungi, yeast and mold, for 12 months. Plus, it adds hydrating and skin smoothing benefits your skin will love!

Are there any precautions with pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Our products have a safe essential oil dilution of no more than 1% and we do not use any essential oils that can interfere with breastfeeding or pregnancy when applied topically at such a small dilution. However, if you have any concerns or questions, we recommend you contact your health care provider.

Why are your products and other eco-luxe products so expensive?

We understand that organic, artisan skincare is not affordable for everyone, unfortunately. Our formulations are packed with as many skin nourishing botanicals as we can fit in a bottle (which is why we never use water or cheap fillers) for the highest performance and best results. Formulating only a short supply of products at a time by hand, carefully curating the highest quality – and sometimes very expensive – ingredients in small, fresh batches, and hand-packing and shipping everything ourselves costs time and money. But we see it as an investment. An investment in your skin, your health, and the environment.

Are your products vegan and cruelty-free?

They are! We only use plant-based ingredients and never anything derived from animals. All our products are tested on humans, never on animals.
